FACE-A-FACE with Ana K

From her childhood in Finland, Ana K has retained a particular interest in light and its essential role in the design of living spaces. She uses it with precision to sculpt and dress the interiors she creates. Her Nordic heritage with its minimalist notes is enhanced by a delicate choice of colours and materials, often inspired by her Spanish roots. We’ve met her in Geneva to talk about her architectural practice and this cultural duality that permeates her work.

Born in sunny Spain, Ana Carpena Luukkonen grew up in Finland, developing a passion for the arts. As a child, she was already playing with light to illuminate her bedroom and thus, brighten up the wintertime. From the golden Southern light to the long Nordic nights, the interior architect draws inspiration from her cultural roots to create subtle plays of chiaroscuro. Mastering both aesthetics and technical know-how, she works on contrasts by playing with direct and indirect lighting, whether integrated or decorative. “Light is an essential element in highlighting volumes. It brings life to an interior and greatly influences its atmosphere,” she explains.

After studying at the HEAD-Genève and working for several years in major architecture offices, she founded her own interior architecture practice, Ana K.  From the creation of private residences to apartment renovations in listed buildings, Ana K is committed to imagining living spaces that are adapted to her clients, with strong concepts that suit their lifestyle and reflect the history of the place or its surroundings. Working hand in hand with them, she guides them in their choices thanks to her expertise and invites them to step out of their comfort zone to create a bespoke interior that perfectly matches their wishes and needs. Designing a living space is an intimate process, it’s all about building trust.

True to her concepts, volumes are designed in a coherent way, interior and exterior circulation is carefully thought through. Paying tribute to the Nordic clean lines, the interior architect infuses each project with a unique sensibility through a subtle combination of colours and materials. She dresses her interiors in natural materials, often with a mineral hint. When the space calls for it, the addition of a colour brings contrast and emotion. The aim is always to create interiors that make the residents feel at home every day, bright living spaces in tune with their current lifestyle and passions!
