Shared Matter at Milan Design Week

In a buzzing atmosphere, Milan Design Week is setting the design world alight. Beyond the many new pieces unveiled, this major event brings together all the key players, sparking captivating discussions and future collaborations. This aspect – the human factor – is the heart of the design industry and of the collective exhibition Shared Matter presented by Pro Helvetia, together with Presence Switzerland.

The collective exhibition Shared Matter celebrates the precious links that enable contemporary creation. In an monochromatic scenography designed by Gini Moynier, the show features a curated selection of six projects by Swiss design studios developed with interdisciplinary partners through research trips, residencies and self-initiated practice around the world. It highlights the shared knowledge embedded in each collaboration.

On top of works by Panter&Tourron, Akuto Studio and Vera Roggli + Julia Villamonte, some projects underline novel, ecoconscious reflexions:

– Fleeting Landscapes by Noelani Rutz – Produced by Tajimi Custiles with the maker Sugiura Seito Ltd., this tile collection underlines the snow’s poetic, yet ephemeral presence, whether through direct casting or glaze translations.

– Re27 by iiode – Lighting made conscious and repairable. With a standard E27 bulb made from recycled materials, this lighting module reflects a considered approach to production, supported by a transparent supply chain.

– Paper Glasses by Silvio Rebholz – Developed during a Pro Helvetia research residency at the R.ng Design Library in China, this project proposes a natural and sustainable alternative to single-use plastic cups. Blending traditional techniques with contemporary design, they are produced with molds coated in beeswax and are fully biodegradable.

As we navigate through Spaziovento, each project opens up a new dialogue. By making visible the shared knowledge in each collaboration, Shared Matter highlights design as a collective practice that connects people not only to objects, but to each other.
