Kristina Dam on Sculptural Minimalism

Nestled in the heart of Copenhagen, Kristina Dam Studio designs its collections by subtly blending artistic expression with Scandinavian refinement. In this carefully curated creative space, sculptures, decorative accessories and furniture complement and echo one another in a unique dialogue. With their distinctive silhouettes, these pieces dress our interiors with a clear ambition: to bring art and its inspiring presence into our homes. An ode to ‘Sculptural Minimalism’, which we discussed with the founder, Kristina Dam.

A graduate in graphic design from the Royal Academy of Art and Architecture, Kristina Dam has developed a keen sense of forms in which solid and void complement one another. This graphic contrast still influences her work today. It was with a collection of limited-edition illustrations and art prints that she launched her studio in 2012. She then designed her first piece of furniture, the Simple Stool, which remains part of the collection to this day. By infusing industrial design with an artistic approach, the studio has forged a distinct identity, a skilful blend of art and interior design that shines through in every piece.

True to the Danish design classics that inspired the founder during her studies, Kristina Dam Studio works with natural materials – be it wood, ceramics or metal. She plays with contrasts by sculpting and shaping them, whilst always placing great attention on artisanal expertise. Using mostly neutral tones, the studio prefers to let the materials and textures express themselves fully. And so, volume comes to life with a structural quality.

Drawing on her background in graphic design, Kristina Dam has incorporated a holistic approach to design into her work – from visual identity to objects, furniture and interiors, in both residential and public spaces. She has always kept a clear objective in mind: to restore an artistic dimension to our interiors. The personal aspiration, which has been with her since the start of her career, is that everyone should have access to art in their own home.

At the head of her own studio, she has, over time, developed a distinctive style that combines Scandinavian refinement with sculptural expression. Even whilst working in parallel as a design director for another Danish brand, she managed to drive her studio forward in a significant way. Every stage of her career has taught her something new, broadened her international knowledge and enabled her to develop and consolidate her own vision.

Over the past months, she has opened a new chapter for Kristina Dam Studio, further refining her aesthetic approach to designing interior pieces that bring a fresh perspective to a space, elevate the interior and infuse it with extra soul.
